Get a free acupuncture chart for different pet species according to the Western approach of point selection. Each diagram is a simple acupuncture point map with acu point locations on anatomy charts for dogs, cats and horses.
As you will see from the acupuncture diagram, locations used for inserting needles are located similarly in both, the traditional Chinese form or the Western approach of treatment, all over the body.
There are usually more points mapped in Chinese charts than in transpositional diagrams.
However, naming of the points is different. Western acu-points are named according to a logical sequence and each point is exactly identified by a code consisting of two letters and a number.
The letters stand for the different meridians, the numbers describe the location along the meridians.
Where the exact location of every single point is depends on the anatomy of each species. This demands a thorough knowledge of veterinary anatomy to be able to needle safely and effectively.
If you would like to learn acupuncture you do best to attend courses and seminars.
You will practice under supervision of an experienced tutor and learn with the help of anatomical models and good quality books the exact location of important acu-points.
In the UK only qualified and registered veterinary surgeons are allowed to practice this alternative form of therapy in animals.

Acupuncture (from Lat. acus, "needle", and pungere, "to prick") is a technique of inserting and manipulating very fine needles into specific points on the body with the aim of relieving pain and for therapeutic purposes.
(Interestingly, it is often misspelled as accupuncture or acupunture.)
According to traditional Chinese theory, these points lie on meridians or channels, along which Qi, the vital energy, flows. (See also the downloadable acupuncture charts above.)
However, there is no physically verifiable anatomical or histological basis for the existence of acupuncture points or meridians.
Modern acupuncturists see them in functional rather than structural terms.
History of acupuncture tells us that it has been used for about 3500 years in China in humans and animals (horses, birds) and is most commonly associated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
Different types of acupuncture (Classical Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, Vietnamese, Korean and a Western approach) are practiced and taught throughout the world.
