ASPCA Pet Insurance – Affordable Pet Insurance for Dogs and Cats

ASPCA pet insurance offers reasonable pet health plans for canine and feline pets. There are four levels of protection, a wellness coverage and an option for chronic conditions you can choose from:

Four Levels of Coverage

  • Level 1 is a basic accident cover that pays for injuries originating from accidents and veterinary procedures associated with an accident. This plan will not cover illness or preventative routine care. There is an annual maximum coverage of $8,000 with a per-incident maximum benefit of $2,500.
  • Level 2 covers accidents and illnesses, but no wellness care. The annual maximum benefit is $8,000 with a pre-incident cover maximum of $1,500 .
  • Level 3 will insure your pet for accident and illness and on top of this also for basic routine care. The annual maximum for this level is $11,000 with a per-incident maximum benefit of $3,500.
  • Level 4 is a comprehensive coverage for accident, illness and advanced wellness care, that includes advanced vaccinations, dental cleaning and flea and heart worm prevention on top of the routine care. Annual maximum is $13,000 , per-incident maximum comes to $5,000.

Beside these four levels of coverage ASPCA pet insurance recommends to take out their Continuing Care option for the cover of chronic health conditions in subsequent years.

Premiums of all pet health plans offered will rise every year after your pet has had it's ninth birthday.

Deductible, Coinsurance, Reimbursement

The deductible is an annual $100 for all four Levels. If you chose to buy the Continuing Care option, you will need to pay an extra $100 annual deductible on top of your basic care policy.

Co payment is always 20%.

ASPCA pet insurance pays according to allowable covered charges. This means, they pay for costs that are considered reasonable for the geographic area you live in. The company uses publicly available and proprietary information about vet fees and charges to determine fair reasonable veterinary expenses.

This insurer lets you choose your own vet for your pet.

Waiting Period

Accident and routine care cover starts as soon as the policy is effective. Illness coverage: 30 days after the policy is effective.

The waiting period info does not apply in all states the same. Also, be aware that the company issues policies on the 1st and on the 15th of a month only.

Continuing Care for Coverage of Chronic Problems

ASPCA Pet Insurance recommends to take out the cover for ongoing care. Illnesses or injuries that develop in one policy year and which will need veterinary care and treatment in following years can be covered with this optional plus.

This option can be added to Level 2 -4.

Example: the additional premium on top of Level 2 starts at $5.05/ month for a cat and $6.56/month for a dog with a lifetime maximum benefit of $2500 and a per-incident limit of $1000. (Rates apply to certain breeds, age of pet and the location you live at.)

Eligible are pets under 11 years of age that are not yet diagnosed with a chronic health problem and it needs to be purchased at the time of your first enrolment or at a renewal, not at mid-term.

There is an extra $100 annual deductible (see above) that is separate from the deductible of your base plan.
