Causes of Hoarseness in Cats

by Pat
(Ontario, Canada)

My cat has a raspy meow. Please tell me what might cause this.
Many thanks, Pat & "Choco".

Answer

Hello Pat!

The infection of the upper respiratory system can cause your cat to be hoarse,This can cause a sore throat and an inflammation of the larynx. If your cat has already a known history of respiratory ailments, she will be especially proned to infections. Coughing and sneezing are symptoms to watch for, as they will cause inflammation of the nasal cavities and throat.

In rare cases paralysis of the larynx can be the cause of a hoarse voice. The vocal cords within the larynx will not open up properly while breathing and cause an unusual sound.

Rabies can lead to laryngeal paralysis and hoarseness. If you live in a country, where rabies in wildlife or feral animals is a problem, you should let your vet exclude this.

Repeated and chronic herpes virus infections can damage the nasopharyngeal tissue linings making it easier for other viruses and bacteria to affect the upper airways. The inflammation from the infection can cause hoarseness. Common symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and occasionally nosebleeds.

Foreign bodies or objects that are lodged within the oronasal cavity or in the pharynx or oesophagus can cause inflammation that can lead to hoarseness. Usually you will notice other signs, such as sneezing, coughing or retching in your cat.

Often, benign oral or nasal cavity polyps can cause hoarseness, Beside the alteration in your feline pet's voice, you may find other, associated health problems, such as ear infections, sneezing and coughing that are recurring.

Cancer of the tissue and structures in the pharynx or larynx can cause hoarseness, coughing and recurring respiratory problems.

Best is to let your vet have a thorough look at Choco. Be prepared that he may need to have an anaesthetic, as the examination of the nasal cavity and throat area can be done properly only, if your cat is asleep.

Best Wishes
