Dog diarrhea is a common dog health problem owners often have to deal with.
Frequent causes are
If your pet has had diarrhea for a couple of days, it is a good idea to let your vet do an examination.
In case of a young puppy act immediately and take it to the vet at the same day!
Bring a fresh fecal sample of your dog with you to the consultation, so it can be checked for parasites and other pathogens. A fecal sample can help to determine the cause of canine diarrhea.
If parasites are found they can be eliminated by a variety of anti-parasitic drugs available specifically to canines.
In absence of intestinal parasites it could be caused by viruses or bacteria. In a case of infection an antibiotic treatment and a change of dietary management is most likely required.
You can feed bland diets, such as chicken and rice or cottage cheese and rice or a specially formulated prescription diet determined by your vet. Probiotics and oral solutions of electrolytes can be given to support medical treatment and speed up recovery.
In acute and more dramatic cases your dog will need most likely IV fluid therapy to substitute the loss of fluids and electrolytes.
Bear in mind that untreated, severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration and finally shock, so take action. Especially puppies and illthrifting adult canines need to be examined and treated early by a vet to avoid severe complications or a fatal outcome.
