Mass on dog's rib cage

by Dani

I discovered a small mass on top of my 6 year old dog's rib cage about a month ago.
Since then it has gotten much larger to about the size of a small plum, but flatter.
What is this? What should I do ?

Answer

Hello Dani!

Finding a growth or a mass somewhere on your own dog is always a concern.

If you think it did get bigger in a short time I recommend you let your vet examine it.

To evaluate a growth it is crucial to be able to palpate and see it in person. Depending on the signs, growth rate and characteristics of this mass, they may suggest even surgery to remove it.

Usually a part of the removed mass is sent to a lab for histology, so they can say for definite if it is a benign or malignant mass, from what kind of tissue it origins and the likelihood of recurrence. Further treatment will be determined upon the histological result.

Please, keep me updated on the outcome!

Best Wishes,
